Stele of Buddha Foxiang (Zaoxiang): stele with acephalous Buddha presented frontally, the missing right hand should be raised in abhaya mudra (absence of fear), and the left hand in varada mudra (giving) as is often the case in Northern Wei steles. The Buddha is dressed in the monastic mantle under which the robe appears. The halo, with the hole for placing the head, is still present, as is the entire background of the stele, decorated with lotus leaves, then in a second register with stylized flowers. The top is occupied by flying celestial beings seemingly descending from the sky, some playing music. This type of figure represented on a stele background representing a mandorla, seems to derive from votive bronze figures. The composition of this stele, as well as the Buddha's garment, are an expression of the most classic Northern Wei statuary. (Catalogue of the Castor/Hara sale of 11 and 12/12/10) cf "Return of the Buddha", pp. 62 to 70 and more specifically, the parallel with fig. 56, of the stele dated 534 from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Rogers Fund, 1919, and fig. 31 p.42 (broken, burned). Grey schist. China, Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534). 53x17xH108cm.
