Imposing sculpture representing a stylized bull, handcrafted in terracotta, with a beautiful natural patina attesting to its antiquity. Originating from the Jodhpur region, in Rajasthan (North India), this type of piece was traditionally used as a votive offering or as a decorative element in rural homes. The bull, a symbol of power, fertility, and protection in Hindu culture, notably evokes Nandi, the mount of the god Shiva. This naive and expressive style is found in the tribal art of the Thar desert. Wear and usual losses, old patina, traces of pigments and remnants of polychromy. Late 19th century, Jodhpur, India. Foxiang (Zaoxiang): stele with an acephalous Buddha presented frontally, the missing right hand should be raised in abhaya mudra (absence of fear), and the left hand in varada mudra (giving) as is often the case in Northern Wei steles. The Buddha is clad in the monastic robe under which the monastic garment appears. The halo, with the hole for placing the head, is still present, as is the entire background of the stele, decorated with lotus leaves, then in a second register with stylized flowers. The top is occupied by flying celestial beings seemingly descending from the sky, some playing music. This type of figure represented on a stele background forming a mandorla, seems derived from bronze votive figures. The composition of this stele, as well as the Buddha's attire, are the expression of the most classic Northern Wei statuary. China, Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534). 53x17xH108cm.
